Today is Humboldt Squid day. I just got a copy of "Duikmagazine", the best diving magazine that we have here in the Netherlands. The magazine features an eight page story about Humboldt Squids that I made last September. That trip brought us far into the Sea of Cortez. I was on a live aboard expedition with the goal to find these enormous Red Giants. It took a lot of time before we finally found the animals, but at least we found them. Duikmagazine has used one of my Humboldt Squid images for the cover.
I am currently running running a story about the Sharks of Cape town in the South African diving magazine DiveStyle. I love South Africa and I do love Cape Town. Our latest trip to South Africa brought us to various places including Cape Town. This is really a town that I can recommend. The city is great. The Table Mountain is great. The diving is more than great. Imagine a place where you can easily find Seven Gill Sharks, Mako's, Blue Sharks and Great White Sharks just to name a few. We visited Cape Town together with our twin girls who were only 18 months at that time.
André Crone together with African Watersports will organize a photography trip to South Africa for the Sardine Run next year. This trip is planned from 5-11 July 2012. The Sardine Run is the most impressive showcase of natural predation in the world. Vast schools of Sardines are swept along the eastern coast of South Africa by an enormous body of cold water. These Sardines attract Dolphins, Humpback Whales, Brydes Whales, birds and many different kinds of sharks that all predate on the Sardines.
I am planning to take a lot of stuff underwater for my upcoming photo expedition. One of the items is a small Go Pro Hero action camera. These cameras are capable of filming in full HD resolution. I hope to film some of the making-of and behind-the-scenes stuff with this camera. I will post these videos here on my blog. Taking video is will become inevitable for underwater photographers since media are changing continiously. An example of this are the many iPad magazines that are coming out at the moment. Luckily most modern dSLR camera are capable of filming in HD resolution too.
I received a stack of the newest issue of Duikmagazine today. That issue holds four articles by me and my wife. I personally like how they have published our biological story about Dolphins. Our other biological story in this issue is about Caribean Reef Sharks. Both the Dolphins and Shark article were shot in the Bahamas last year. Snorkeling with these magnificent animals is always a treat.
I just spent three weeks in South Africa where I just started to cooperate with DiveStyle magazine. I knew they were planning my Tasmania article somewhere during this summer. But I was still surprised to see that my article came out almost on the same day that we landed in South Africa. I walked into a dive shop and there I found out that they even used one of my images as the cover image for DiveStyle magazine.
We just returned from South Africa today. We visited one of my favorite diving countries for three weeks. Our first stop was at Umkomaas where we stayed for over a week. Umkomaas offers great diving and lots, lots of Sharks! We had great luck with the visibility at the wrecks of Umkomaas, really Red Sea visibility. More about Umkomaas and our South Africa trip later on this blog and "Duikmagazine". We are organizing a fantastic South Africa expedition for next year for which we will have six places available.
Our old website was, just old. It was meant as a temporary site, but we didn’t have the time to replace it. That time has come now. Welcome to the third version of www.elysia.nl, the website of photojournalist André Crone and his wife and text writer Eveline Crone de Brabander. You cannot imagine how much time it costs to create a new website, but we are happy with the result. We do appreciate feedback from you about our site.
We do have an annual dive show here in the Netherlands. The edition of the diving magazines that is running during that show is the most important one of the year because of the extra exposure that it is getting. I am having, to my surprise, the cover of of the dive show issue of "Duikmagazine" this year. "Duikmagazine" is the best diving magazine here in the Netherlands. The content is entirely created by Dutch and Belgian photographers and writers. The nice thing is that this is my sixth dive show cover of "Duikmagazine" in a row and my 35th cover in total.
Ok, I promised some hardware projects that I would publish on my blog. This is certainly photography related, but a bit technical for most of you I guess. The first piece of hardware is my studio time lapse photography engine. More projects will follow, but not all of them will be open source, open hardware like the MicroEngine. The software that I have written for the device is open source under the GPL license.
The Ukranian magazine "Photographer" published a special issue of their magazine with portfolio's of the worlds best underwater photographers. I am very proud to be in that magazine too. You can find more information about this issue of Photographer on their website. The complete list of featured photographers is:
